Ireland will be without defender Richard Keogh, midfielder James McCarthy and forward Sean Maguire for their World Cup playoff against Denmark which kicks off with the first leg on Saturday. The trio were in a provisional 34-man squad named by Martin O’Neill last month for the two legs starting at Copenhagen’s Parken Stadium before the return in Dublin three days later. Keogh came off…

Braun Strowman destroys The Miz

The groans coming from social media were almost audible when WWE halted a ‘Best Of 7 Series’ between Sheamus and Cesaro only to form a tag-team with both men last summer. The series didn’t have a proper conclusion; the only explanation came from then-Raw GM Mick Foley, who felt Sheamus and Cesaro would be better off a team. He was right. Since randomly coming together, the pair have gone from strength-to-strength as one of WWE’s best duos. After being rechristened ‘The Bar’ this year, Sheamus and Cesaro have also went…

England give Steve Finn more time

England will give injured pace bowler Steve Finn a couple more days before making a decision on whether to keep him in the Ashes touring squad, coach Trevor Bayliss said on Tuesday. All-rounder Moeen Ali, who has a side strain, will also miss both matches but Bayliss said he…

Goan football’s slow death due to lure

Salu Sawant turned out for Seza FC by day, and took to the stage for Zagor — Goa’s traditional colourful, musical folk theatre — by night. ‘Feast in the morning, football in the afternoon, drama in the evening’ was the Goan way of life. Paddy fields that form the state’s bordering landscape when the sea doesn’t, along either side of the NH17, used to make way for small clearings which were used to kick around a ball made by rolling a cloth into a sphere. Goa was a giant gymnasium…

This model is increasingly having an influence

News reports of the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) activities abound in most countries across the globe yet there is little consensus in the literature as to the effectiveness of the IMF’s work. The purpose of this study is to provide a systematic review of the IMF literature that identifies the effects of IMF bailouts from the 1970s to the present. We investigate significant elements and consequences of the IMF’s bailout policies and implementation approaches such as bailout effectiveness, moral hazard, conditionality, leadership, governance and the sustainability of IMF policy. Based…

Webster’s Dictionary defines a model

Webster’s Dictionary defines a model as “a simplified description of a complex entity or process” such as a “computer model” of the circulatory and respiratory systems. The term comes from the Latin root modus, which means “a manner of doing or being; a method, form, fashion, custom, way, or style.” More specifically, the word “model” is derived from the Latin modulus, which essentially means a “small” version of the original mode. A “model” of an object, for example, is typically a miniature version or representation of that object. A…

World politics analysis

South Korean police were on high alert in Seoul on Tuesday to monitor protests by both critics and supporters of President Donald Trump as the U.S. leader arrived in the country amid concerns over North Korea’s nuclear threats. Surrounded by thousands of police officers and a tight perimeter created by buses, hundreds of anti-Trump protesters rallied at a boulevard near the U.S. Embassy, holding banners that read “No Trump” and “No War.” The demonstrators accused the outspoken president of raising tensions with North Korea and pressuring Seoul to buy more…

House tax panel adopts GOP changes after day of bickering

After a day of partisan bickering over whether the Republicans’ sweeping tax plan would truly help the middle class, a key House panel on Monday approved late changes. The House Ways and Means Committee voted 24-16 along party lines to adopt the amendment from its chairman, Rep. Kevin Brady, R-Texas. The changes were made to the complex GOP tax legislation…
